History

The Pike Road community began over 175 years ago with the arrival of the Meriwether, Mathews and Marks families around 1815. As more families arrive, more services were needed, causing the small town to flourish. The town earned its name from its location at the intersection of Pike Road and Meriwether Road. The main intersection was home to several businesses, including cotton gins, a hardware store, livestock auction, post office, general store and doctors’ offices. The first official Town Hall was located in an old home located just north of the intersection of Meriwether Road and Pike Road.

Pike Road continued to grow throughout the twentieth century. Up until this point, children were educated by individual families. However, in 1918, the people of the community had raised the money and procured the land for the schoolhouse, and the Pike Road Consolidated School opened in 1919. The school became a center for community activities and remained so until its close in 1970.

After many years of discussion, Pike Road officially incorporated into a Class 8 municipality in 1997, with a 97% vote for independence. During the town’s first years, council and planning commission meetings were held over how to best supply services such as water, sewer, road maintenance, fire and police protection to the citizens. Pike Road became the first municipality in Alabama to adopt Smart Code; a system that places value on creating town centers, preserving green spaces and making cities friendlier to pedestrians and recreation.

Today, Pike Road is home to over 5,100 citizens, two prominent business partners, a cutting-edge school plan and a top-notch recreational model. To learn all this and more about Pike Road’s story, please visit their official website at: http://www.pikeroad.us/pike-road-story.html
