History

Lake Martin is a man-made lake, created as the result of the completed construction of the Thomas Wesley Martin Dam in 1926. As early as 1916, the Alabama Power Company began to acquire land for what would one day become Lake Martin, razing the communities of Susanna (Sousanna) and Benson, including several houses and churches and relocating 12 cemeteries containing over 923 graves.

By 1923, land clearing began and tracks were laid from Kent to the construction site so supplies could reach the isolated area. The Alabama Power Company built a complete village for those who were working on the construction of the Thomas Wesley Martin Dam. The village included housing, a mess hall, a commissary, a recreation hall, and a hospital. In 1926, the gates closed; however, the lake did not completely fill until heavy rains on April 23, 1928, which forced the company to open several of the 20 floodgates for the first time. In 1936, the dam was officially named for the Alabama Power president, Thomas Wesley Martin. To discover this and more about Lake Martin’s rich history, please visit: Lake Martin History
